Whether you’re visiting from out of town or you live close by, there’s always something special about a trip to Charleston. For our family, it’s a place that feels like home away from home. We spend a lot of time downtown. From the cobblestone streets to the pastel-colored homes, this city is full of Southern charm, history, and amazing food.
Over time, we’ve truly fallen in love with the city — its history, its food, its people, and the way it seems to slow life down just enough for you to enjoy it. There’s no shortage of things to do with or without the kiddos.
Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend a day (or weekend!) exploring one of our favorite places.
1. Take a Carriage Ride Through History
Start your visit with Old South Carriage Tours and enjoy a leisurely ride through Charleston’s historic downtown. Your friendly guide and beautiful horse will take you past centuries-old architecture and share stories that bring the city’s past to life.
Want something a little spookier? Try their Haunted Carriage Ride at twilight and hear tales of pirates, ghosts, and Charleston’s most haunted corners.
2. Stroll Through the Charleston City Market
The Historic Charleston City Market is a must-see. It’s filled with local vendors selling handmade jewelry, artwork, sweetgrass baskets, and Lowcountry treats — perfect for souvenirs or gifts. Also check out their website for "Night Market" dates and times!
3. Relax at Waterfront Park
Grab a coffee or an ice cream and enjoy a peaceful morning walk at Charleston Waterfront Park. Take in views of the Cooper River, dip your toes in the famous Pineapple Fountain, or just sit back and soak up the breeze.
4. Wander Down Rainbow Row
No trip to Charleston is complete without a photo along Rainbow Row — the iconic stretch of colorful historic homes. It’s one of the most photographed spots in the South, and for good reason!
5. Visit the South Carolina Aquarium
Perfect for families, the South Carolina Aquarium on the harbor offers an up-close look at local marine life and a fun educational experience for kids and adults alike.
6. Eat Your Way Through the City
Charleston’s food scene is unbeatable. Start with brunch at 82 Queen, where you can enjoy shrimp and grits or crab cake benedict in a charming courtyard. After a day of exploring, head to Slightly North of Broad (SNOB) for dinner — a local favorite known for fresh seafood and Southern-inspired dishes. Just 2 of our many favorite restaurants in downtown Charleston.
7. Shop on King Street
Wrap up your visit with a stroll down King Street, Charleston’s shopping hub. You’ll find everything from high-end boutiques to locally owned shops, plus plenty of spots to grab a cocktail or dessert along the way.
